Digital Impressionism - Learning to Look

I've been making a series of digital paintings on my iPad as I travel through South East Asia, mainly landscape studies. I guess you could call them Digital Impressionism!

Most of them are painted on location, but I often continue them from memory or photographs later. I try to work on a small scale to encourage looseness and interpretation, this could mean zooming out or using as big a brush as possible.

With these, the process is more important than the result. They are about looking closely at the world, studying, and improving as an artist.

(For anyone interested, I'm using the Procreate app.)

Drawing on Bangkok River

Here are some drawings I made while chilling out at Art cafe on the Bangkok River. There were so many textures and colours everywhere. Tourists would drive by in long boats. If you look closely, you can see the fish in the water.

Dalai Lama mural

I recently painted a Freedom Fighters mural, which is made up of 4 freedom fighter portraits.

This one I did of Dali Lama, on the left side of the wall.

The quote says:
The more you are motivated by Love, The more Fearless & Free your action will be.

Mixed Media on Paper

I dropped some drawings off at a gallery the other day, so I made sure I got good quality scans of them. They are from last year, and I'll share each of them on the blog.

City Life

I went to the city for the first time in ages yesterday, which inspired this drawing "City Life". It wasn't like the air was polluted or anything but it looks like that in the drawing... maybe its a collective memory of random cities I've visited!

Here's another painting I recently finished. Because I was moving studios, I was in a rush to finish a lot of the ones that were nearly done. Deadlines are great for getting things done and dusted!

Drawings of Bangkok

Bangkok is a crazy place, full of extremes with action on every corner. Traveling around, I took my sketchbook everywhere. I visited beautiful temples, drew market scenes around Chinatown, drew cityscapes from hotels and shopping malls, and enjoyed a longtail boat through the floating markets. Of course, I loved the food - from local dishes in funky street stalls to fancy restaurants.
